The Urgell is a region in the center of Catalonia, between the Noguera and Segarra, commnicated by the A2 motorway (Madrid-Barcelona) and C14 (Montblanc-Andorra) road.
One can distinguish four counties with its own characteristics: the sector of Pla d'Urgell, Ribera de Sio, River basin of Ondara and the valley of Corb.
The current region of Urgell consists of twenty municipalities, comprinsing a total area of 579,73 square kilometers, with a population of 36.670 inhabitants (2009). The economic base of Urgell revolves around agriculture, livestock and the production and processing of agricultural products.
Tarrega is the most important, and a third of the local population and numerous industries. Stand out Agramunt and Bellpuig.
The Urgell is in the middle of the plains of Ponent, around the city of Tarrega, regional head and commercial center, services and communications sector of the Plain.
It comprises part of the Plain of Urgell, crossed by river Ondara.
To the north the terrain is rugged in the Sierra de Almenara (459 meters) and the Sió Valley, ZEPA special protection areas for birds, where it has established Agramunt. To The south is the valley of the river Corb, with staggered reliefs, at the border with the Segarra and Conca de Barbera (Tallat range, 803m).
The climate in Urgell is Mediterranean with continental influence. The low altitudinal difference between the various sectors of the region does not condition many climatic contrasts within the region.
There is an accentuation noted in the thermal oscillation in the median and bottom of the region.
The fogs of thermal inversion are frequent from autumn to spring calm days. Mist may rise during the day, but may be more than a week away.
When temperatures drops below freezing and foggy weather, frost forms on land and plants.
More than 80% of the area of the region of Urgell is cultivated.
Is very little natural vegetation, except mountain areas of the north and south of the region.
It is considered that the natual vegetation in most of the region would be a forest of oak, although there are currently few oaks (ZEPA)
There are oak forests in parts of the northern mountains (Almenara, Montclar) and in some corners of the Tallat.
The oak is a slow-growing forest that has been destroyed for crops, for pastures, or simply as a result of logging.
In our region there are a lot of quality restaurants, many of them unknown, with a variety of recipes, where traditional flavors with new textures, new ingredients and products, all in the proximity.
This great gastronomic richness of the past and present come together to create and develop traditional dishes such as snails, troters, casserole chunk, barbecue ...
Also a number of establishments make a wide range of cuisine with original dishes with quality products of the region, well cooked and well presented.
The pairings with wines with Denomination of Origin of Costers del Segre, and specifically sub-areas of our region, Urgell, Valls del Riu Corb or Artesa de Segre, make the kitchen area a very good range of dishes imaginatively and reasonable prices.
Sió has meant always a river little known, but despite its low flow is a long river and has become a space frontier in the history of this land and a common geographic space for social commnication, culture and economics, following a longitudinal shape between the villages on the river.
The border castles in the tenth, eleventh and twelfth centuries, represented a genuine defensive network of the territory.
The Sio springs in Gàver in the high región of Segarra, taking waters even of the upper Anoia (historic Segarra), crossing the Segarra, Urgell and Noguera leads up to Balaguer. It is approximately 70 km long.
The river Sió determine us therefore a thematic route that coincides fully with the boundary lines that are created in the Upper toward the end of the tenth and early eleventh century and draw a very characteristic historical and monumental landscape.

ROYAL MONASTERY OF SAINT MARIA OF VALLBONA
The history of the monastery begins in 1153 when the hermit Ramon de Vallbona gathered a mixed community of hermits.
In 1176, having marched the men in the Montsant, some nuns from Tulebras (Navarra) joined the community and became part of the Cistercian Order.
The Cistercian Order was under the Rule of Saint Benedict, who rejected everything that was unnecessary.
He was born in the eleventh century as a monastic renewal that was against wealth, betting by prayer, work, meditation and welcoming pilgrims.
With the figure of Bernard of Clairvaux this order spread throughout Europe and came to the monasteries of Poblet, Santes Creus and Vallbona de les Monges.
The first abbess was Oria Ramirez. The monastery was governed by an abbess and nuns had about thirty that could be compared to the male monasteries of Poblet in the Conca de Barbera and Santes Creus in Alt Camp.
The prestige of the monastery was very important during the Middle Ages by the extent of its properties, the subsidiaries founded monasteries and social status of the nuns who entered, many of them from the nobility.
Monastic life throughout its 800 years of existence has never been interrupted, except in time of war.
The monastery church is the transition from Romanesque to Gothic. Highlights include the two domes; one is the lantern dome and the other is the bell tower.
On each side of the presbytery there is a sarcophagus. One is the tomb of "Violant d' Hongria", second wife of King James I the Conqueror and the other is her daughter, Princess "Sança d' Aragó".
The cloister, begun in the twelfth century, shows the different architectural styles each of the wings.
The chapter of the fourteenth century meeting place of the community.
Presides the image of the Virgin of Mercy, which is polychrome terracotta.
At the beginning of the nave is the beautiful image of the "Virgin of the Cor" polychrome stone and work of Guillem Seguer, dating from the fourteenth century.
The chapel of the Virgin of the Cloister where is preserved the image of Santa Maria, dating from the twelfth century and was restored in the fourteenth century.
The square was the place to the cemetery of the nuns, that were later buried in the cloister.
On the wall of the church are different sarcophagi houses.
In 1931 the monastery was declared a National Cultural Interest.
